Town Of Buckeye To Be Recognized As A City

The town of Buckeye will become a city. With all nine precincts reporting from Tuesday's election, unofficial results show Buckeye voters decided by roughly a four-to-three margin to accept officials' recommendation to change the city's designation.
Mayor Jackie Meck says the change will help Buckeye promote itself as a location for business and industry as it competes with other communities that have city status. Buckeye's population was about 55-thousand last year. The 2000 Census recorded only 65-hundred residents. Becoming a city allows Buckeye to adopt a city charter that establishes the powers and authority of a city within state law. However, Meck has said Buckeye does not plan to adopt a charter.
