Lady Matadors commence annual tournament against Southern Idaho at 11AM at Joe Henry Park
Yuma, Arizona – February 1, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the annual Great Western Shootout will begin at 11AM this Thursday, February 2nd, and will continue through Saturday afternoon, February 4th. The 3-day tournament will take place at Joe Henry Park (North 23rd Avenue & West Colorado Street (near 1st Street & Avenue B) in Yuma) and the AWC Softball Field on the AWC campus (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma). The AWC Lady Matadors will kick off the tournament Thursday morning and play a total of eight games before the tournament concludes.
Besides the host Lady Matadors-who come off their second straight Region I Semifinals appearance last May, the tourney will also feature none other than the two teams who faced off against each other in the 2011 NJCAA Division I Softball National Championship Game last May, and are ranked #1 & #2, respectively, in this year’s NJCAA Division I Softball Preseason Poll: defending champion Yavapai College and Salt Lake Community College. Also in the field is the team that the Lady Matadors will open up tournament play against Thursday, the College of Southern Idaho, a 44-win team a year ago that finished 2nd to SLCC in the Scenic West Conference. Fellow Region XVIII foe College of Southern Nevada, who won 37 games a year ago, also returns to Yuma for the second straight year, along with a pair of Region XVIII teams that are newcomers to the field this year, Western Nevada College and Colorado Northwestern Community College. Region I is not only represented by AWC and Yavapai, but also by the Mesa Lady Thunderbirds, who wound up one game away from the Region I Division II Championship in 2011; and the always-formidable Eastern Arizona Lady Gila Monsters from Thatcher. Rounding out the 11-team field is a pair of perennial Great Western Shootout attendees, El Paso Community College from Texas, and California’s Golden West College.
The tournament officially commences tomorrow at 11AM at Joe Henry Park with a tripleheader on two different fields, with AWC facing CSI, Western Nevada and Colorado Northwestern in succession on Field 1. Friday’s and Saturday’s action will start at 9AM (and last through approximately 7PM), and will be divided between Joe Henry Park and the AWC Softball Field (where the Lady Matadors will play their remaining five games of the tournament over 2 days). Admission to the tournament is just $5 per day (at each venue), and the single admission fee allows fans to see every game at that venue during that day. Fans looking to obtain Great Western Shootout schedules and/or 2012 AWC Softball schedules can log onto the AWC Athletics website (www.azwestern.edu/athletics), and click on the softball page.

Longomo named ACCAC Division I Women?s Basketball Player of the Week

Freshman forward/guard becomes 3rd Lady Matador to earn POW honor this season
Yuma, Arizona – January 31, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that AWC Women’s Basketball player Lisette Longomo has been named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Division I Player of the Week for the week ending January 28th. It’s the fourth time this season that an AWC Women’s Basketball player has won the award, and Longomo is the 3rd Lady Matador to earn the accolade in the last 4 weeks, following the lead of teammates Jolie Olingende and Jade Washington. The announcement comes just three days after Longomo helped lead the Lady Matadors to a 59-43 victory over Mesa Community College Saturday night at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus in Yuma.
It can seem puzzling to say that a team that already sports an 11-game winning streak earlier in the season, and a nine-game winning streak at the moment, would still be spending the last month trying to put things together. The defense has created huge success so far for the Lady Matadors while AWC Women’s Head Basketball Coach Patrick Cunningham has patiently waited for his freshmen players to come around offensively to assist Olingende, the lone returning sophomore from a year ago. The emergence of players like Washington and Longomo has come about during the current winning streak, with Longomo actually leading the Matadors in scoring average over the last 6 games.
Last week, it was obvious from her first shot that Longomo’s comfort zone has improved drastically, since she started the Lady Mats off on the right foot in Thatcher last Wednesday by hitting four shots in the first seven minutes of the game… 3 of them from 3-point range. The native of Kinshasa, Congo, Africa, did the same thing for the Lady Mats to get the 2nd-half offense going, hitting 3 field goals in the opening minutes to help propel AWC to an insurmountable 23-point lead. Longomo led the way for AWC in the 63-55 win over Eastern Arizona College with 25 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a pair of steals.
Three nights later against arguably the Lady Mats’ toughest home opponent this season, Mesa, Longomo did the same thing coming out of the locker room: hit a long trey to get the Matadors off on the right foot. Then, in the second half, as the Lady Thunderbirds began to claw their way back from an 18-point Matador lead, Longomo helped stem the tide by hitting four big field goals in the final 10 minutes of play. She finished the game with 15 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals in the victory.
For the week, Longomo averaged 20 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2 assists. On the season, Longomo is 11th in the ACCAC in scoring (13.8 points per game) and 9th in assists (2.9 per contest). She’s also 2nd on the team in both field goal shooting (45.8%) and 3-point shooting (29.3%), and is 3rd on the team in steals (2.1 per contest).
Longomo and the 11th-ranked Lady Matadors now head back out on the road to the Phoenix area to face off against the Scottsdale Lady Artichokes and lead off the men’s-women’s basketball doubleheader. The Lady Matadors will go for their 10th straight win as they tip off the doubleheader at 5:30PM tomorrow night (Wednesday, February 1st), with the Matadors’ Men’s Basketball team to follow at 7:30PM. Fans that can’t make the trip to Scottsdale Community College (9000 East Chaparral Road in Scottsdale) can catch the action on the Matador Sports Network’s radio (SportsRadio 560 KBLU in Yuma) and internet audio (www.azwestern.edu/athletics & www.kbluam.com) legs beginning at 5PM Wednesday afternoon. The Matadors will then host the Phoenix College Bears this Saturday night, February 4th on Yuma Sun Newspaper Night at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma). Admission prices are as follows: $5 admission for adults, $3 for military personnel (with valid military ID), seniors and students ages 12-17, and free for AWC students, NAU-Yuma students, Matador Athletic Association members and kids under the age of 12.
"The Drew Keehn Era" of Matador Baseball kicks off tomorrow in Las Vegas

New-look Matadors head to Silver State for 2-day Coyote Border Battle for regular season opener
Yuma, Arizona – January 26, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the AWC Baseball team will officially open their 2012 regular season schedule tomorrow morning, Friday, January 27th, as they take part in the four-team, two-day Coyote Border Battle Baseball Tournament, hosted by the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas, Nevada. The Matadors will play four games over the two days, facing the 2011 Western District Runners-up from Salt Lake Community College tomorrow and Saturday, while squaring off against Region XXVIII foes College of Southern Idaho tomorrow night and the host team from the College of Southern Nevada to wind up play Saturday night.
For the Matadors, taking the field tomorrow signals the beginning of ‘The Drew Keehn Era’ as they’ll begin the regular season with a new Matadors’ Head Baseball Coach for the first time since 1984. Keehn spent last year as the lead assistant under 27-year head coach John Stratton, and was handed the reins to the program just one day after Stratton announced his retirement last April. Keehn and his new-look coaching staff have gone to work bringing in fresh talent, and only six players actually return from the 2011 roster. That includes the ace of last year’s pitching staff, Kahana (kuh-HAH-nuh) Neal, as well as part-time starter Ryan Malmstrom (MAHLM-struhm). It also includes ’11 Mats’ stolen base leader Hunter Zwart (ZWAHRT), who’s expected to anchor the outfield, as well as 2011 part-time starter (and Kofa High alum) Simon Corea (koh-REE-uh).
As far as newcomers to the staff are concerned, sophomore transfer Cyle (KYL) Bettis, Kofa High alum Blake Johnston, Mexicali product Angel Olivas and California native Mario Morales should push Neal & Malmstrom for spots in the Matadors’ starting rotation. In the bullpen, fellow Kofa King Claudio Valencia will take over as the closer, with Utah righty Jake Hewitt, Yuma High alum Francisco Gomez (who may also be the designated hitter) and even converted 2011 backup middle infielder Martin Chacon (mahr-TEEN chuh-KOHN) providing plenty of middle relief. Keehn’s put a big emphasis on defense during the fall, and his new charges have responded. The main guy calling pitches and directing the infield from behind the plate could be a couple of guys, since San Luis’s own Benito Garcia has impressed in camp, but has been pushed for the starting job by southern California natives Jacob Dominguez and Nathan Orozco. The rest of the infield will be completely new, and has been a spirited battle from September on. When Valencia’s not on the hill, he’ll be at 3rd base, but after that, the race for the starting middle infield jobs will be decided early in the season between Kofa High alum Hector Valenzuela, San Luis native Antonio Mendoza, Colorado Rockies’ draftee Casey Scott and midyear transfer Oscar Fitch. On the other corner, the first base job has been a two-man race between Tucsonian Dylan Dyson and midyear transfer Jordan Atkinson. Moving to the outfield, after Zwart, there’s little margin for error for the five guys that could wind up flanking him: Corea (who started 18 games for the Mats last year), Las Vegas product Xavier Palmer, southern Californians Juan Avena (uh-VEE-nuh) and Dallas Hessler, and even Aussie import Hayden Calvert.
The Matadors are seeking their first Region I Playoff berth since 2006 as they kick things off tomorrow. The Mats will face off against 17th-ranked Salt Lake in single games tomorrow (10AM) and Saturday afternoon (2PM), Southern Idaho tomorrow night at 7PM, and then the hosts from CSN Saturday at 7PM (all times listed are Arizona time). The Matadors will come home after the tournament and prepare for next weekend’s Caballero Classic, which will be held next Friday and Saturday, February 3rd & 4th at Desert Sun Stadium (Avenue A south of 32nd Street in Yuma). Fans looking to obtain Caballero Classic schedules and/or 2012 AWC Baseball schedules can get them on the AWC Athletics website (www.azwestern.edu/athletics).

Back-to-back playoff semifinal finishes whet appetite for this season as new season commences on road
Yuma, Arizona – January 26, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the AWC Softball team will officially open their 2012 regular season schedule tomorrow morning, Friday, January 27th in Las Vegas, Nevada, by taking part in the two-day CSN Softball Kickoff Classic hosted by the College of Southern Nevada. The Lady Matadors will play five games over the two days of the tournament, starting with North Idaho Community College tomorrow morning at 9AM Arizona time.
Expectations for the Lady Matadors are naturally high, since they’ve yet to finish lower than the semifinal round of the Region I Playoffs in the two years under Nikki Bethurum. They’ll also bring their entire starting infield from a year ago back for 2012. Marina Quijano (muh-REE-nuh kee-HAH-noh), Whitney Campagna (kam-PAGG-nuh), Brittany Vanderdrink and Tori Rich were all integral parts of the Lady Matadors’ drive to the 2011 postseason as freshmen, and all return with a full year of starting experience under their belts. Quijano, Vanderdrink and Rich finished 3, 4 and 5 respectively in hitting for the Lady Matadors in 2011, while Quijano also was the team’s home run leader, and Rich was the only other Lady Matador player (other than recordsetter Jessica Soria) to finish in double figures in steals (16) last season. Rich may be the team’s most versatile player, since she’ll likely be the opening-day catcher, but also play plenty at first base and in the outfield.
Those four will have the task of training the new recruits, including Cibola High alum Myliah (mye-LEE-uh) Ramirez, who will be at 1st base when Rich is behind the plate; California natives Savanna Baggett (suh-VAN-nuh BAG-geht) and Abrianna Palacio (AH-bree-AH-nuh pah-LAH-see-oh), who battled it out in preseason camp to take the spot of Rich at catcher for the second game of the doubleheader; Kofa High alum Madison Tracy, who will keep Quijano & Vanderdrink on their toes pushing for a middle infield spot; and sophomore returner Jennifer Duenas (DWAYN-yahs), as well as freshmen Breanna Delgadillo (bree-AH-nuh DEHL-guh-DEE-yoh) and Cibola High alum Alex Roman (roh-MAHN), who all had impressive stints at third base during ‘fall ball’. Moving to the hill, there wasn’t anyone better last year for the Lady Mats than Amber Taynton, and she returns to be the ace of the staff for her sophomore campaign. Unlike 2011, Taynton won’t be alone in experience, since fellow sophs Trish Porter and Yesenia Perez return as well. Pushing them for starting spots are Blythe native Courtnie Ploesch (PLOWSH) and El Centro’s own Megan Lerno (who fans will also come to know as the team’s main source of power at the plate).
That’s where the experience ends, though, since their two-year starting outfield of Soria, Amanda Soedjadi and Marquis Lozoya has graduated, leaving starting spots up for grabs. That list starts with the lone returner, Taylor Bashor (BA-shur), who saw plenty of time in right field in 2011. She’ll likely start in right, but has been challenged for that spot by Palacio and fellow southern California native Morgan Paul. Rich could split time in center field with San Diego native Julia Shrum. And in left field, Lauren Miranda-who may be the fastest player on the team-has battled throughout the fall with fellow newcomer Ploesch.
The Lady Mats will play three games on Friday, facing off against NIC at 9AM, El Paso Community College at 11:30AM and then Chattanooga Community College from Tennessee at 7PM. Saturday, the Lady Mats will face a pair of teams that were nationally ranked at the end of last season: Odessa College from Texas (ranked 16th last May) at 11:30AM, and then winding up play against NJCAA Championship Runnerup Salt Lake Community College at 2PM (all times listed are Arizona time). The Lady Matadors will come home after the tournament and prepare for next weekend’s Great Western Shootout, which will feature 11 teams from three different time zones for a three-day tournament that will be played at both Joe Henry Park (North 23rd Avenue & West Colorado Street in Yuma (near 1st Street & Avenue B)) and the AWC Softball Field on the main campus (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma). The Lady Mats will play 8 games over the length of the tournament, which happens Thursday through Saturday, February 2nd, 3rd and 4th. Fans looking to obtain Great Western Shootout schedules and/or 2012 AWC Softball schedules can get them on the AWC Athletics website www.azwestern.edu/athletics
10th Annual Diamond Classics Reunion Weekend commences this Saturday

Annual AWC Alumni Baseball game features name change, expected return of MLB stars Molina, Romo
Yuma, Arizona – January 19, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the 10th Annual John Stratton AWC Alumni Baseball Game will take place this Saturday afternoon, January 21st at 1PM at Kammann Field, the Matadors’ home baseball field. Over 50 past & present players are expected to take part in the event. The game is a culmination of the 10th Annual Diamond Classics Weekend, which gives past AWC Baseball Alumni a chance to catch up with old classmates.
It will be a strange yet wonderful day for this event, since there will be more new-look things about this game than ever before. First, the game will celebrate its 10th Anniversary with a name change-and a new head coach manning the home dugout. This game originated from John Stratton, who helped bring in the alumni to play against his new team for the first 9 years. Now, after stepping down last April after 27 years at the helm, he’s back today-to coach the Alumni team for the first time. The idea to rename the game after Stratton was hatched by the man he handed the reins to the program to at the end of last season: Drew Keehn. After spending a year as Stratton’s lead assistant, Keehn will bring a new-look 2012 squad to the table on Saturday that features six returning sophomores, and will coach against his former boss from the ’12 Matadors’ dugout.
The AWC Baseball program’s storied 48-year history began in 1964 under current AWC Assistant Baseball Coach (and former AWC Athletic Director) Jack Watson. Watson’s 11 years of building the program from scratch was highlighted by winning seasons throughout his tenure before he stepped down as both Matadors’ Baseball Coach and Athletic Director in ’75. Stratton took over the baseball program in 1984, and built a winning tradition that has seen several Matador players head to major league organizations. Many former players return each January to the AWC campus to play in the annual event, including: current San Francisco Giants’ relief pitcher (and 2010 World Series Champion) Sergio Romo; fellow 2010 World Series participant (and past World Series champion) Bengie Molina, who sat out the season as a free agent last year after playing for the Anaheim Angels, Toronto Blue Jays, San Francisco Giants and Texas Rangers over the 13 previous seasons; AWC’s first NJCAA All-American (and longtime Detroit Tigers’ Director of Player Personnel) Glenn Ezell; former Dodger minor leaguer Gary Pullins, who coached baseball at Brigham Young University for over 20 years and was recently inducted into the BYU Athletic Hall of Fame; current Dixie College president Bob Huddleston; former Orioles’ minor leaguer Brad Drysdale and former Royals’ minor leaguer (and Kofa High alum) Bryan Casey; and current minor league prospects Michael Jones (Braves) and Stephen Smith (Dodgers).
Many listed above have already confirmed their appearances for this weekend, which begins at the batting cage at 11:15AM Saturday morning with alumni batting practice at Kammann Field. Fans are welcome to come enjoy the festivities at that time to get autographs and listen to the swapping of old stories, and the media is encouraged to get interviews with players-past and present-at that time. After that, the fans will get treated to an action-filled afternoon as the Alumni battle the 2012 AWC Matadors’ baseball team in the 10th Annual John Stratton AWC Alumni Baseball Game at 1PM. Admission to the game is absolutely free. Organizers are asking the media to get the word out about the game so that local alumni who might not have had the chance to get involved in the past can get into the mix for 2011 and beyond. Those looking to get involved can call Drew Keehn at (928) 344-7538 for more information. Fans can log onto the Alumni Baseball Game page on the AWC Athletics website: http://www.azwestern.edu/student_services/athletics/alumnibaseballgame.html.

Sophomore forward/center averages ‘double-double’ to become Mats’ 1st POW recipient for 2011-12
Yuma, Arizona – January 17, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that AWC Men’s Basketball player Renan Lenz (heh-NAHN lenss) has been named the ACCAC Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Week for the week ending January 14th.It’s the first time this season that a Matador Men’s Basketball team has won the award, and it’s the second time that Lenz has won the award during his two years as a Matador. The announcement comes three days after Lenz and the Matadors fell to 10th-ranked South Mountain Community College, 58-56, in a thrilling ACCAC Men’s Basketball game Saturday night at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus.
Lenz has been the focus of many an opposing defense since he first arrived on the AWC campus in the summer of 2010.However, over the last few weeks, AWC Men’s Head Basketball Coach Charles Harral has challenged his sophomore forward/center to be more aggressive in his play.Lenz certainly responded to the challenge in the Matadors’ two games this past week.First, Lenz helped the Matadors finish off a string of five consecutive conference road games on an up note in the Phoenix area. The Matadors got a strong test from Chandler-Gilbert Community College-especially when the Coyotes cut a 13-point halftime deficit to just one midway through the 2nd half.Lenz, though, helped keep the Coyotes from ever taking the lead in the 2nd half. His impressive work underneath with hook shots and aggressive moves to the hoop on offense-as well as 3 blocked shots to go along with 13 rebounds on defense-were key elements in the Matadors’ 72-57 win.Saturday night, the Matadors returned to the friendly confines of ‘The House’ for a challenging test against South Mountain.Despite the fact that the Cougars continually changed defenses mostly to take away the interior presence of the Matadors, Lenz stayed steady, including making a couple of hoops down the stretch when the Matadors were battling back from behind.Lenz posted his third straight ‘double-double’ by the end of the night, racking up 10 points to go along with 11 rebounds (and 4 more blocked shots). For the week, the native of Santo Angelo, Brazil, averaged 15.5 points, 12 rebounds and 3.5 blocks. For the season, ‘The Renan Factor’ is easily the ACCAC Leader in blocked shots (2.4 per game) and is now 3rd in the league in rebounds (9.3 per contest). He’s also raised his scoring average to 13.3 points per game (3rd-best on the team).
Lenz and the Matadors will continue their current 3-game homestand with a pair of home games this week. The Matadors will host the Pima Aztecs tomorrow night, January 18th on 1st Bank Yuma Night, before winding up the home this Saturday night, January 21st, as they host the Glendale Gauchos. Both games are 7:30PM starts that will be the second half of the men’s-women’s basketball doubleheader each night, with the 12th-ranked AWC Lady Matadors tipping the evening off at 5:30PM at ‘The House’ (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma).Admission prices are as follows:$5 admission for adults, $3 for military personnel (with valid military ID), seniors and students ages 12-17, and free for AWC students, NAU-Yuma students, Matador Athletic Association members and kids under the age of 12.

Colorado Springs, CO – January 11, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the Lady Matador Basketball team has risen to its highest national ranking of the season in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Poll released earlier today. The Matadors are ranked 12th in the current poll, moving up a whopping seven spots in one poll. The #12 spot is three spots higher than their previous high mark for the season of 15th, which they enjoyed in the NJCAA Poll of December 7th. The Lady Matadors will put that ranking on the line later tonight in the Valley of the Sun as they battle Chandler-Gilbert Community College to conclude a 5-game conference road trip as part of a men’s-women’s basketball doubleheader starting at 5:30PM.

Sophomore forward/center leads Lady Matadors to 3 wins in 1st week back from holiday break
Yuma, Arizona – January 10, 2012 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that for the second time this season, AWC Women’s Basketball player Jolie Olingende (JOH-lee OH-lihn-GEHN-day) has been named the Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Women’s Basketball Division I Player of the Week for the week ending January 7th. The announcement comes just three days after Olingende helped lead the Lady Matadors to a 67-38 victory over Cochise College in the team’s first conference game after the holiday break Saturday in Douglas.
With over three weeks in between games, Olingende could’ve been forgiven for showing some rust in her first week back, but the native of Kinshasa, Congo, Africa, refused to show any weaknesses to the opposition in the Lady Mats’ three wins this week. Tuesday night, Olingende took the floor with her team to face off against defending NJCAA Division III Champion Anoka-Ramsey Community College in the first night of the Wells Fargo Classic-presented by Wells Fargo Bank. Olingende led a balanced effort that gradually beat down the Lady Golden Rams and run away with the 80-47 win in the 2nd half. Olingende was one of four different players in double figures with 12 points while adding 9 rebounds, 3 assists and a blocked shot. 24 hours later, Olingende helped the Lady Mats finish off the Classic with a convincing 65-53 victory over Homenetmen ARARAT as she posted a ‘double-double’ of 14 points and 12 boards. The Lady Matadors then hopped on the bus to travel seven hours away from Yuma for Saturday’s first conference matchup of the new year against Cochise College. The Lady Mats expected an offensive punch from the Lady Apaches-that is, until Olingende and the stifling AWC defense took control of the game midway through the first half. Olingende’s interior defense and quick hands on the perimeter helped force several steals and limited Cochise to just 18 first-half points. Conversely, Olingende herself scored 10 points in each half to go along with another 12-rebound performance. For the week, ‘Jolie Olie’ averaged a ‘double-double’ with over 15 points and exactly 11 boards per contest. For the season, Olingende is 7th in the ACCAC in scoring (14.8 points per game), and has taken over the conference lead in rebounds at 10.6 per contest. She’s also tied for 4th in the league in field goal percentage (54%).
The Lady Matadors now get ready to finish out this five-game conference road swing tomorrow night as they head back to the Phoenix area to take on the Lady Coyotes of Chandler-Gilbert Community College to lead off the men’s-women’s basketball doubleheader. The Lady Matadors will go for their 15th win in the last 16 games as they tip off the doubleheader at 5:30PM, with the Matadors’ Men’s Basketball team to follow at 7:30PM. The Matadors will then come home to kick off a 3-game homestand this Saturday night, January 14th against South Mountain Community College on Pilkington Commercial Night at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma). Admission prices are as follows: $5 admission for adults, $3 for military personnel (with valid military ID), seniors and students ages 12-17, and free for AWC students, NAU-Yuma students, Matador Athletic Association members and kids under the age of 12.

For Josh Brown, it is validation for a very solid single season in a Matador uniform that he spent much of the season covering Matador opponents’ top receivers.Brown-a native of Lancaster, Texas-decided to stay home for his freshman year of college, playing for Trinity Valley Community College.Brown played seven games for the Cardinals in 2009, amassing 14 overall tackles and 1 tackle for loss.Brown transferred to AWC in time to join the Matadors for spring drills this past January, and entered preseason drills this past August battling for one of the four open spots in the defensive secondary.Brown worked hard to impress the coaching staff, and when the Matadors took the field to start the season in El Paso, Texas, against Monterrey Tech, Brown was one of the two starting cornerbacks.Brown, Nate Willis and Tony Grimes spent much of the season complimenting each other at the corner spots, and Brown wound up playing in all 12 games this season for the Matadors, starting seven of them.Brown finished with 21 overall tackles (11 solo), 1 tackle for loss, and he picked up an interception in the Matadors’ home opener September 10th against Mesa that set up a Matador touchdown.Brown now heads to a Bulls’ program that won the 2010 Meineke Car Care Bowl last year and went 5-7 this season.
Meanwhile, Darwin Rogers didn’t get the chance to participate in a bowl game during his Matador career, but he was an integral reason why the Matadors got there.A transfer from the University of Illinois, Rogers walked in knowing that he’d have a good chance to start at the wide-open tight end position (with no returners from 2010) if he did what he was supposed to do in preseason drills.Rogers worked hard and was the opening-day starter at that position. The native of Chicago made his presence known to fans early in the season, making his first reception as a Matador a 19-yard TD catch in the home opener September 10th.While it would be his only catch of the season, Rogers was a big part of the Matadors’ blocking schemes and rushing success in 2011, and started all 11 regular season games for the Matadors until suffering a season-ending ankle injury in the regular season finale.Rogers now heads to a Sun Devils’ program that just played in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas two weeks ago, and he’s expected to vie for the starting tight end job with the Sun Devils under new head coach Todd Graham.

Williams, Young earn 1st Team honors; Johnson gets Honorable Mention nod
Yuma, Arizona – December 12, 2011 – Arizona Western College is proud to announce that three members of the AWC Football team have been named to the NJCAA All-American list. A pair of sophomores, running back Damien Williams and linebacker Chris Young, were both named to the 1st Team All-American squad, while sophomore wide receiver/punt returner Dejoshua 'D.J.' Johnson earned a spot on the NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American list. The Matadors have now placed 10 student-athletes on the prestigious list in the last 3 years-the most to be named in that short a span in Matador Football history. The announcements come just 9 days after the three led the Matadors to their second appearance ever in a national championship game at the 2011 El Toro Bowl-presented by Time Warner Cable-at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma on December 3rd.
-Seeing Damien Williams’ name on the 1st Team NJCAA All-American list was pretty much a foregone conclusion as of mid-November. He may have been one of the area’s best-kept secrets as a freshman-since he never started a game in 2010 (he was a backup to eventual NJCAA Offensive Player of the Year Reggie Bullock)-but once he placed among the WSFL leaders in yards per carry, rushing TDs, and rushing yards, the WSFL coaches couldn’t pass up naming him 2nd Team All-Region I, and the expectations skyrocketed from there. They weren’t anything that the San Diego, California, native couldn’t handle, since Williams made a mockery of the WSFL Rushing & Scoring races from Week 1 on this season, doubling up the rushing yardage of any of his nearest pursuers from Week 4 on. ‘The Mira Mesa Express’ gained at least 100 yards or more on the ground in every game except the season opener, and exceeding the 200-yard rushing mark in a game twice. That includes a career high of 268 yards on the ground in a win at Scottsdale in late September; a 6-touchdown performance against New Mexico Military Institute in early October in which he ran for five of them and then threw his career TD; and then a 146-yard, 2-touchdown performance in his final game as a Matador against East Mississippi in the El Toro Bowl (for which he received AWC’s Offensive Most Valuable Player honors in the game). For the season, the native of San Diego, California, blew away the competition for 1931 yards rushing on 259 carries, which made him the top rusher not just in the WSFL but also in the nation. His 26 rushing touchdowns (30 overall with his 2 receiving TDs, 1 kickoff return for a TD and even a passing TD) helped him easily win the WSFL Scoring Title. He also was the Matadors’ 4th-best receiver, reeling 20 catches for 317 yards. He also finished as the Mats’ top kick returner for the second year in a row with 365 return yards on 15 attempts. He preceded this honor with being named as the WSFL Offensive Player of the Year, ACCAC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, and earned 1st Team honors on both the All-WSFL & All-ACCAC postseason teams.
-While Chris Young may be the 3rd defensive player in as many seasons to be named to the 1st Team NJCAA All-American squad (following Ben Swarts in 2009 and Isiah Wiley in 2010), Young actually becomes the first Matador linebacker to be honored on the national level in the Tom Minnick Era. It’s certainly no surprise to any of the Matadors’ 12 opponents this past season that he’s considered one of the top linebackers in the nation this season. The native of Auburn, Washington, was always around the ball as a defender, which is why he wound up scoring more touchdowns than several of top offensive players in the WSFL this season. After starring at safety for the Matadors as a freshman (3rd on the team in overall, solo and assisted tackles), the Matador coaches felt moving him to linebacker for his sophomore season would better utilize Young’s talents for the future. From the first game of the season this year, Young was a dominating force, especially forcing turnovers, quarterback sacks, and tackles for loss. In fact, 30 of his tackles were for lost yardage, and the 150 yards of lost yardage those tackles accumulated actually led the nation. But it was his uncanny ability to turn turnovers into touchdowns that Matador fans will remember from ‘CY’ this season. Young had a span of six weeks where he returned four fumbles for touchdowns. He added to that against Green River Prep in mid-October when he not only returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown, but also blocked a punt in the end zone that was recovered by Matador teammate Sam Wren for yet another score. For the season, his 8 ½ sacks led the WSFL, his 45 solo tackles led the team, and he finished 10th in the nation in overall tackles with 111. He also had a total of 2 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles and 5 fumble recoveries. Young was named WSFL Defensive Player of the Year, ACCAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and earned 1st Team honors on both the All-WSFL & All-ACCAC postseason teams.
-It is truly a special honor to be good enough to be chosen as one of the top return specialists in the nation, but believe it or not, this is actually the first postseason honors list that De'joshua Johnson hasn’t been listed in twice. Since transferring from East Mississippi Community College this past summer (who he would ironically play against in the NJCAA National Championship Game earlier this month), Johnson’s explosiveness on the football field has earned him multiple honors as both a punt returner and wide receiver. Matador fans were first formally introduced to the talents of Johnson in the Matadors’ home opener in mid-September, when the native of Pahokee, Florida took a pair of punt returns to the end zone. That was a foreshadowing of things to come, since ‘D.J.’ took four more punts back for scores in the span of the next month. His marks of 555 punt return yards and 6 touchdowns on special teams led the nation, and that didn’t count the 2 touchdowns (and over 170 yards in returns) on punt returns that Johnson scored that were called back. Oh, by the way, he was also a nearly uncoverable wideout for the Matadors, reeling in 9 more touchdowns (including a 20-yard score in the El Toro Bowl) over his 51 receptions and 796 receiving yards (both marks 2nd-best on the team). Those marks not only earned him 1st Team All-WSFL & All-ACCAC postseason honors as a punt returner, but also got him named 2nd Team on both squads as a wide receiver.

Team earns highest national ranking of season with 10-game winning streak
Colorado Springs, CO – December 7, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the Lady Matador Basketball team has risen to its highest national ranking of the season in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Poll released earlier today. The Matadors are ranked 15th in the current poll, and are one of only 2 ACCAC teams to be ranked in the DI Poll (the other being Central Arizona at #4). The Lady Matadors moved up 5 spots from last week’s #20 ranking, and are four spots higher than their previous high mark for the season of 19th, which they enjoyed in the NJCAA Preseason Poll. The Lady Matadors will put that ranking on the line later tonight in the Valley of the Sun as they battle Phoenix College to kick off a men’s-women’s basketball doubleheader starting at 5:30PM.
Highest national finish since 1972 for runners-up in 2011 El Toro Bowl
Colorado Springs, CO – December 5, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the Matador Football team has finished with a #3 national ranking in the final NJCAA Football Poll released earlier this afternoon. The Matadors were knocked out of the top spot by virtue of their 4th-quarter rally falling just short in the NJCAA National Championship Game at the 2011 El Toro Bowl-presented by Time Warner Cable. East Mississippi Community College earned their first-ever national football title with a 55-47 victory over the Matadors in Saturday’s bowl game, and moved into the #1 spot in the final poll. The Matadors dropped behind both the Lions and #2 Butler Community College, who defeated Trinity Valley Community College (TX) in the Citizen’s Bank Bowl yesterday. Despite falling out of the top spot, the #3 final ranking is still the highest the Matadors have finished in a final national poll since the 1972 national championship season in which they finished atop the poll. The Matadors finished with an 11-1 overall record-the first 11-win season in the program’s 47-year history.

Record-breaking afternoon for QB Wallace powers 55-47 win over top-ranked Arizona Western
Yuma, Arizona – December 3, 2011 – In a battle that featured the nation’s top rushing defense against the nation’s top offense, the 2nd-ranked Lions of East Mississippi Community College defeated the top-ranked Arizona Western College Matadors, 55-47, in the NJCAA Football Championship Game at the 2011 El Toro Bowl-presented by Time Warner Cable-at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma Saturday afternoon. It’s the first-ever national football title for the Lions, and foiled the Matadors’ chances for their first national title since 1972.
The sellout crowd of 5500 fans that braved an unusually cold and windy Yuma day got their money’s worth as they took in the first El Toro Bowl since 1973. The Matadors’ game plan of trying to rattle record-setting EMCC quarterback Bo Wallace never came to fruition as the Pulaski, Tennessee freshman took the opening drive and marched the Lions down the field on a 7-play, 77-yard drive-culminating with a 52-yard TD strike from Wallace to Rodney Davis to give the Lions a 6-0 lead (the extra point was wide left). That set the tone as the Lions’ no-huddle, quick-strike offense scored 27 unanswered points to start the game-all on Wallace touchdown throws. A pair of Wallace-to-Lacoltan Bester TD throws followed by a 29-yard TD pass to Jeremy Reed gave the Lions a 27-0 lead just 2:21 into the 2nd quarter. Finally, after being bottled up by the EMCC defense for the first 24 minutes of the game, the nation’s leading rusher, AWC tailback Damien Williams, awakened the home crowd by breaking three tackles at the line of scrimmage, changing direction and turning on the jets in the open field for a highlight-reel 53-yard TD scamper with 5:49 left in the half to get AWC on the scoreboard. Wallace brought the Lions right back, hitting Davis twice: with a screen pass that turned into a 60-yard gain, then over the middle with a 24-yard TD pass that helped Wallace set a new NJCAA record for touchdown passes in a single season with 51. Undeterred, the Matadors tried to build momentum going into halftime as Matadors’ quarterback Cameron Coffman engineered a 9-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, hitting 5 of his 7 pass attempts on the drive, and finishing it off with a 5-yard strike to sophomore wideout Josh Ford in the back of the end zone with 30 seconds left to cut EMCC’s halftime lead to 34-13.
The real shootout was yet to come as the two teams combined for 42 3rd quarter points. The Lions struck first as Wallace found J.J. Harbin with a 29-yard TD throw three minutes into the half. That’s when the Matadors began pulling out the stops to get back in the game. Ford and Coffman hooked up for the second time in the game for a touchdown-only this time, it was Ford on a double-reverse tossing a 22-yard pass into the end zone to give Coffman his first career receiving touchdown. After AWC safety Quyuan Mattox tagged Wallace with his only interception of the game, the Matadors cashed it in on the next play as Williams-the ‘Mira Mesa Express’-motored 68 yards for his 26th rushing touchdown of the season. The Matadors seemed to have the momentum in their favor and had the Lions buried inside the EMCC 10-yard line when Wallace struck again, finding running back Rodriguez Moore for a screen pass that turned into a 94-yard TD pass, Wallace’s 7th of the game. Undaunted, the Matadors took the momentum after Andre O’Neil returned the ensuing kickoff to the EMCC 20-yard line, and Coffman cashed it in on the next play with a TD bullet to D.J. Johnson with 4:11 left. EMCC again responded, this time with a 7-play, 65-yard drive that ended with Antoinne Adkins scoring the Lions’ only rushing TD of the game: a 3-yard scamper out of the ‘Wildcat’ formation to give EMCC a 55-34 lead after 3 quarters. The Matadors would then storm back as Coffman engineered a nine-play, 59-yard drive with a pair of 10-yard runs and three passes to Williams-the last one a 15-yard TD strike to bring the Mats within 15 (the extra point was blocked) with just under 12 minutes left. The same two would hook up for another 15-yard TD pass with 3:39 left to cut EMCC’s lead to just 8. It would be the closest the Matadors would get, though, as their last gasp attempt on fourth-and-14 with :11 left fell incomplete, and the Lions had their first NJCAA Football Championship and their first-ever 12-win season. Wallace, who finished with 30 completions in 44 attempts for 452 yards and 7 touchdowns, was named EMCC’s El Toro Bowl Offensive Most Valuable Player; while Lions’ defensive end Denico (deh-NEE-koh) Autry was named their defensive MVP. For the Matadors, who end the year with the first 11-win season in the program’s 47-year history, Williams was named their offensive MVP as he rushed for 146 yards and 2 TD on 21 carries. Meanwhile, starting middle linebacker Steffon Martin earned the Matadors’ defensive MVP honors.
Matadors place 12 players on All-WSFL & All-ACCAC Football postseason teams

3-time WSFL Champion Matadors place 8 on 1st Team All-ACCAC, 9 on 1st Team All-WSFL squad
Yuma, Arizona – November 27, 2011 – Arizona Western College is proud to announce that twelve members of the AWC Football team have been named to the All-ACCAC and All-Western States Football League postseason teams. AWC running back Damien Williams (who was also named ACCAC/WSFL Offensive Player of the Year), linebacker Chris Young (also was named ACCAC/WSFL Defensive Player of the Year), wide receiver Josh Ford, center David Ke’kuewa (KEH-koo-WAY-vuh), defensive lineman Randy Gregory, linebacker Steffon Martin (steh-FAHN), defensive back Tony Grimes, and punt return specialist De’joshua ‘D.J.’ Johnson were all named 1st Team on both squads. Offensive lineman Will Harris joined them on the All-WSFL’s 1st Team, and also earned a 2nd Team All-ACCAC nod. Joining him on the All-ACCAC 2nd Team (and placing on the All-WSFL’s 2nd team as well) were Johnson (as a wide receiver) and defensive lineman Tomasi Molesi (toh-MAH-see moh-LESS-ee). Finally, placing solely on the All-ACCAC’s 2nd Team were defensive lineman Calvin Tonga and linebacker Ryan Mosby (MOHZ-bee). The announcements come following the conclusion of the WSFL postseason coaches’ meetings in Glendale.
-For Josh Ford, the postseason selections demonstrate how reliability as a receiver can pay dividends. While his teammate, Johnson, may have had the more flashy catches, Ford was as steady as the Matadors could’ve asked for all year long. The only returning receiver from a year ago, Ford started out gradually finding his place in the new-look offense, and once he started making key catches to extend Matador drives, his role was set. The native of Washington, D.C. became Matador quarterback Cameron Coffman’s favorite 3rd-down target, and his favorite target overall. Ford’s 52 catches on the season not only led the team but were 3rd-best in the WSFL. Ford-whose nickname is the ‘D.C. Sniper’-also had the 3rd-most touchdown receptions in the league with 9, and finished with 728 receiving yards, which was 2nd on the squad and 5th in the WSFL.
-Leading the way for an offensive line that was a big question mark going into the season was starting center David Ke’kuewa. With a pair of NJCAA All-American offensive linemen moving on after the 2010 season, the coaching staff put five linemen on the 2011 line that had started a total of four games going into the season. Three of those starts were from Ke’kuewa, who had moved into the Matadors’ starting lineup late in the season, and actually had started at center in the 2010 C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl last December. But from the onset of this season, it became clear that Ke’kuewa’s relatively short experience wasn’t an issue, and he became the fulcrum of the 6th-most powerful rushing offense in the nation. In fact, Matador fans were hushed when the native of Kea’au, Hawaii, went down midway through the Matadors’ game at Glendale with what was pondered to be a season-ending knee injury, yet after the results came back negative on any major damage, Ke’kuewa refused to miss more than just the second half of that game, and wound up starting all 11 games at center.
-Speaking of guys who know how to come on late in the season, defensive end Randy Gregory wasn’t even a starter going into the 2011 season. A native of Fishers, Indiana, finally broke into the starting four-man line in Week 5, and from there, he became a terror in the opponents’ offensive backfield. Gregory came into his own when the Matadors needed him most late in the season, coming up with a fumble recovery for a touchdown, a sack and 13 tackles in helping the Mats beat nationally ranked Eastern Arizona one week, and then another 1 ½ sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery against nationally ranked Snow the next week. Despite only making seven starts, Gregory wound up 2nd on the team in tackles for loss with 18 ½ and lost yardage from those tackles (108). He was also tied for 3rd on the team with 7 sacks, 4th in assisted tackles (56) and 5th in total tackles (73).
-It was his linebacking teammate (and best friend on the team), Chris Young, that grabbed many of the headlines with his touchdowns scored off turnovers, but those in the know were fully aware that the heart and soul of the Matador defense was middle linebacker Steffon Martin. The second of the Martin family to become a star linebacker for AWC in recent years (behind older brother Robert), Martin didn’t miss a start in his two years for the Matadors. But after starting at outside ‘backer a year ago, the Matador coaches wanted the native of Indianapolis, Indiana to slide to the middle to anchor the defense in 2011. Anchor it he did as the Matadors became the stingiest rushing defense in the country, and Martin had everything to do with that. Martin’s 78 assisted tackles placed him 2nd in the nation in that category, and he was also among the top 20 defenders in the NJCAA in total tackles (103) and tackles for loss (17). He also had a pair of interceptions, forced a fumble, and his 7 ½ sacks ranked second on the team.
-The starting defensive secondary was completely new for the Matadors in 2011, but that didn’t mean that the Matador coaches didn’t have some experience to rely on. University of Mississippi transfer Tony Grimes provided the bulk of that experience and maturity when the Matadors had to have it. When the Matadors began their most crucial stretch of the season-playing three nationally teams in succession-Grimes was one of those that stepped up. In fact, the native of Hollywood, Florida, changed the momentum of the game twice at Glendale with a pair of interceptions-the second one returned 59 yards for a touchdown. Grimes wound up tied for the team lead in interceptions with 4, and added a sack, 6 tackles for loss, and 32 total tackles for the season.
-It is special enough to be chosen for any postseason honors in the WSFL-which wound up with the most nationally ranked teams this season. It’s even more special when you’re chosen for the same teams twice. De’joshua Johnson is the only player in the WSFL to have earned that honor as both the top punt returner in the league as well as one of the most explosive and productive wide receivers. To say that ‘D.J.’ toys with opposing special teams’ defenders is an understatement. The quick-as-a-flash Johnson first sent the message that he was a force to be reckoned with when he took a pair of punt returns to the end zone in Week 2 against Mesa, then proceeded to take four more punts back for scores in the span of the next month. His marks of 555 punt return yards and 6 touchdowns on special teams led the nation, and that didn’t count the 2 touchdowns (and over 170 yards in returns) on punt returns that Johnson scored that were called back. Oh, by the way, he was also a nearly uncoverable wideout for the Matadors, reeling in 8 more touchdowns over his 46 receptions and 750 receiving yards (which led the team).
-The selection of Will Harris may be the one that flew under the radar the most for Matador fans. While Ke’kuewa was the one anchoring the offensive line in the middle, Harris was the one who performed-and performed well-everywhere the Matadors placed him. A backup tight end for the Matadors a year ago, the native of Fontana, California, was slid inside to an offensive line position for this season. A knee injury suffered in preseason drills caused him to miss the season opener, and he was still getting back to full strength as a backup at right tackle for the next two games. When he was deemed fully healthy, though, Harris slid into the starting lineup at left tackle, and wound up being huge in giving freshman quarterback Cameron Coffman the confidence to not worry about the pressure from his blind side.
-Tomasi Molesi was a two-year starter for the Matadors on the interior of the defensive line, and in many ways, his key to success was his lack of notoriety. The native of Oceanside, California, was as reliable as they come on the D-line, starting every game in his two years for the Matadors. Molesi was the main stopgap in powering the nation’s top rushing defense-as evidenced by his 14 ½ tackles for loss and 88 yards as a result of those. He was also a terror for opposing quarterbacks with 7 sacks, forced a fumble and recovered 2 others. In his final regular season quarter as a Matado, Molesi got a defensive lineman’s dream as he picked a Mesa pass out of the air and rumbled 28 yards for a touchdown.
-Standing next to Molesi on the interior of the line the past two years was Calvin Tonga. Like Molesi, Tonga came to the Matadors from the Golden State (his hometown is Riverside), and it was immediately apparent that his 6-foot-3, 315-pound frame would be a major obstacle for any opposing linemen to try to create running holes past him. When rushers and quarterbacks got close to him, Tonga had a knack for creating turnovers as he forced 3 fumbles this season and recovered one of those. He also pitched in 2 ½ sacks to go along with 9 tackles for loss and 42 tackles overall.
-Finally, it was a three-linebacker scheme that the Matadors employed this season, but that didn’t deter Ryan Mosby from creating his own spot on the field. A transfer from the University of Kentucky, Mosby had to battle for a starting job with three incumbents, and began the season coming off the bench. He impressed the coaches during his limited duty in the first three games, but when forced into starting duty with the injury to fellow linebacker Zach Quines, Mosby became an immediate force. In fact, Mosby was so impressive in his first start that he earned WSFL Defensive Player of the Week honors and was already among the team leaders in tackles by Week 4. Mosby became a starter throughout most of the rest of the season, and fought through some nagging injuries of his own to wind up 3rd on the team in total tackles with 81. The native of Greenville, Texas, was also tied for 2nd on the team in assisted tackles (60), while posting a pair of sacks, two fumble recoveries and seven tackles for loss.

Matadors’ sophomore linebacker wins WSFL award outright; shares ACCAC honor with Eastern AZ CB
Yuma, Arizona – November 27, 2011 – Arizona Western College is proud to announce that AWC Football player Chris Young has been named as the Western States Football League & Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year. Young shares the ACCAC side of the award with Eastern Arizona College defensive back Travell Dixon. It’s the second straight season that a Matador defender has won at least a share of the award after Isiah Wiley was named Co-Defensive POY last year. In addition, Young was also named 1st Team All-WSFL and 1st Team All-ACCAC. The announcements come following the conclusion of the WSFL postseason coaches’ meetings in Glendale.
Most teams only need to tout their offensive players when they talk about their scoring punch, but Young has done as much to change that paradigm as any defender in the NJCAA this season. His nose for where the football is at all times on defense has been one of the main reasons that he wound up scoring more touchdowns than several of top offensive players in the WSFL this season. A native of Auburn, Washington, Young was a star safety for the Matadors during his freshman campaign, placing 3rd on the team in overall tackles (57), solo tackles (23) and assisted tackles (34). He also had a pair of interceptions. However, it was his 11 tackles for loss, one sack and a forced fumble that got the Matador coaching staff thinking that there might be a better way to utilize Young’s talents for the future. When Young returned for preseason drills this past August, he was excited to hear that he would be moved to outside linebacker for 2011. From the first game of the season, Young was a dominating force, especially forcing turnovers, quarterback sacks, and tackles for loss. In fact, 29 of his 101 total tackles were for lost yardage, and the 143 yards of lost yardage those tackles accumulated actually led the nation. But it was his uncanny ability to turn turnovers into touchdowns that Matador fans will remember from ‘CY’ this season. From the 25-yard return of a fumble recovery for a touchdown against Mesa on September 10th, if there were defensive points to be scored by the Matadors, Young was almost always in on it. Over the next five weeks after that, Young returned three fumbles to the end zone, and against Green River Prep in mid-October, not only returned an interception 57 yards for a touchdown, but less than two minutes later, blocked a Green River punt in the end zone that was recovered by Matador teammate Sam Wren for yet another score. For the season, his 8 ½ sacks led the WSFL, his 41 solo tackles led the team, and he finished 2nd in the league in overall tackles with 101 (second only to fellow Matador linebacker Steffon Martin). He also had a total of 2 interceptions, 4 forced fumbles and 5 fumble recoveries.
Young and the undefeated Matadors now host the NJCAA National Championship Game this coming weekend as the top-ranked Matadors take on 2nd-ranked Lions of East Mississippi Community College in the 2011 El Toro Bowl-presented by Time Warner Cable. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30PM on Saturday afternoon, December 3rd, at ‘The Vet’, which is just ¼ mile west of the AWC campus on 24th Street near Araby Road in Yuma. A limited number of $8 general admission seats ($10 on game day) remain for the game (reserved seats are sold out). Fans can purchase tickets at the Caballeros de Yuma Office (180 First Street in Yuma (in the old Yuma City Hall building), the AWC Athletics Office (the southwest corner of the gymnasium building on the AWC campus), or the AWC Foundation Office (281 West 24th Street in Century Plaza just east of 4th Avenue). Tickets are also still available for the 2011 El Toro Bowl Hall of Fame Banquet-presented by Alexander Auto Center-on November 30th; and for the El Toro Bowl Pre-Bowl Banquet-presented by Sodexo-on Friday, December 1st. Tickets for each event are $25 apiece, and both events will be held at the Schoening Conference Center at the 3C Building on the AWC main campus (2020 South Avenue 8E in Yuma). For ticket information, a rundown of game-day events, and a full schedule of the week’s activities, fans can log on to the bowl’s official website: www.eltorobowl.com, Proceeds from the bowl game and its related events will benefit several areas, including scholarships at Arizona Western College, as well as allow the Caballeros de Yuma to continue to provide and attract events that positively impact the quality of life in the Yuma community.

Matadors’ sophomore running back wins WSFL award outright; shares ACCAC honor with Scottsdale QB
Yuma, Arizona – November 27, 2011 – Arizona Western College is proud to announce that AWC Football player Damien Williams has been named as the Western States Football League & Arizona Community College Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Williams shares the ACCAC side of the award with Scottsdale Community College quarterback Cody Sokol. It’s the third straight season that a Matador rusher has won at least a share of the award after Reggie Bullock was named the Offensive POY each of the last 2 years. In addition, Williams was also named 1st Team All-WSFL and 1st Team All-ACCAC. The announcements come following the conclusion of the WSFL postseason coaches’ meetings in Glendale.
The sophomore tailback was an All-Region I 2nd Team selection last year without ever starting a game-thanks to finishing 3rd in the WSFL in yards per carry (7.9 yards per rush), 4th in rushing TDs (9), 6th in rushing yards (716) and 8th in rushing yards per game (65.1), while also reeling in 6 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown; and being the team’s top kick returner with 293 yards in 8 returns (a 36.6 yards-per-return average). Because of that, with Bullock moving on to East Carolina, opponents braced for what was in store for Williams this year. Williams didn’t disappoint, gaining at least 100 yards or more on the ground in all but the season opener, and exceeding the 200-yard rushing mark in a game twice. That includes a career high of 268 yards on the ground in a win at Scottsdale in late September, and a 6-touchdown performance against New Mexico Military Institute in early October in which he ran for five of them and then threw his career TD. He also ended what suspense there might have been about who would be the WSFL Rushing and Scoring Champion early in the season by doubling up the rushing yardage of any of his nearest pursuers from Week 4 on. For the season, the native of San Diego, California, blew away the competition for 1786 yards rushing on 239 carries, which made him the top rusher not just in the WSFL but also in the nation. His 24 rushing touchdowns (28 overall with his 2 receiving TDs, 1 kickoff return for a TD and even a passing TD) helped him easily win the WSFL Scoring Title. He also was the Matadors’ 4th-best receiver, reeling 13 catches for 222 yards. He also finished as the Mats’ top kick returner for the second year in a row with 364 return yards on 13 attempts.
Williams and the undefeated Matadors now host the NJCAA National Championship Game this coming weekend as the top-ranked Matadors take on 2nd-ranked Lions of East Mississippi Community College in the 2011 El Toro Bowl-presented by Time Warner Cable. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30PM on Saturday afternoon, December 3rd, at ‘The Vet’, which is just ¼ mile west of the AWC campus on 24th Street near Araby Road in Yuma. Matadors’ head coach earns prestigious honor for 2nd time in last 3 seasons
Yuma, Arizona – November 27, 2011 – Arizona Western College is proud to announce that AWC Head Football Coach Tom Minnick has been named as the Western States Football League Coach of the Year. It’s the 2nd time in the last 3 years that Minnick has earned this honor, and it’s the 4th time that Minnick has won a Coach of the Year Award during just six years as a head coach with two different colleges. The announcement comes following the conclusion of the WSFL postseason coaches’ meetings in Glendale.
It shouldn’t have been a surprise to many that the man who has taken the Matadors’ Football program from a 2-8 record the year before his arrival four years ago to the brink of their first national title in 39 years should earn this honor. The Matadors have been in the national title picture since midway through Minnick’s second year in 2009, and first hit the top spot in the NJCAA Football Poll last September. However, while coming close to possibly being in the national championship game each of the last two seasons, Minnick shaped his 2011 squad to not only have the speed to compete with the top-5 teams he’d faced over the past couple of years but also the swagger to go with it. The result? A team that averaged over 50 points per contest in 2011 while only allowing an average of 11 points per game to their 11 opponents. The Matadors also amassed an 11-win season for the first time in the program’s 48-year history. Minnick has now won two WSFL Coach of the Year Awards in his four years with the program, and they go along with the pair of Midwest Football Conference Coach of the Year Awards he won in his two years at the helm of the Joliet Junior College Football program in Illinois before heading west. “It’s amazing what Tom has been able to do for the football program in just a short amount of time,” said AWC Athletic Director Jerry Smith. “The level of positive interest that his team has generated for Matador Athletics, Arizona Western College and the WSFL in general has been incredible, and he’s extremely deserving of this honor today.”
Minnick and his undefeated Matadors now host the NJCAA National Championship Game this coming weekend as the top-ranked Matadors take on 2nd-ranked Lions of East Mississippi Community College in the 2011 El Toro Bowl-presented by Time Warner Cable. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30PM on Saturday afternoon, December 3rd, at ‘The Vet’, which is just ¼ mile west of the AWC campus on 24th Street near Araby Road in Yuma. AWC Football stays on top of NJCAA Football Poll for second straight week
Colorado Springs, CO – November 14, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that for the second straight week, the Matador Football team remains in the top spot in the latest NJCAA Football Poll released this morning. It is the final NJCAA Football Poll of the regular season, which means that the Matadors will have the chance to play for the national title in whatever bowl they will appear in. It’s the second straight week that the Matadors have been in the #1 spot in the poll, and it’s the third week over the last 2 seasons that the Matadors have enjoyed that honor. The announcement comes just two days after the Matadors finished off their first-ever 11-win season by defeating Mesa Community College, 45-13, in the Phoenix area Saturday night.
Despite the 32-point victory over the Thunderbirds Saturday, the Matadors still knew they had to wait for this morning’s poll to be released before celebrating the chance to be the national champion after the first weekend in December. The poll voting became very tight in the past few weeks between formerly top-ranked Blinn College (now 5th after losing last week), Arizona Western and East Mississippi Community College. East Mississippi tried to enhance their chances of jumping over the Matadors into the top spot with an impressive come-from-behind victory over #5 Mississippi Gulf Coast this past Saturday. However, the Matadors have apparently earned the respect of the nation’s voters, since they actually widened the voting points gap between them and the Lions. The Matadors have now grabbed five of the possible 7 first-place votes, while EMCC and #3 Grand Rapids Community College (tied for 3rd with Butler Community College) each have one of the other 2 votes. AWC also has widened their points lead over EMCC from five to seven, accumulating 138 total points to the Lions’ 131. The Matadors have now spent 405 consecutive days ranked in the NJCAA Top 10. During that stretch, they have been out of the top five just once in the last calendar year.
The Matadors will now wait until tomorrow (Tuesday) to find out who their opponent will be for a postseason bowl, and if the Matadors and Lions will have the chance to meet for the official NJCAA Championship Game. The Matadors finished with an 11-0 overall mark-the best regular season mark in the history of the program-and a perfect 8-0 record in league play, earning them their 3rd consecutive Western States Football League title. The Matadors are hoping they will be able to stay home to play in the national championship game at the 2011 El Toro Bowl-presented by Time Warner Cable-which will be played Saturday, December 3rd at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:30PM.
Matadors ascend to top spot in latest NJCAA Football Poll for first time since last September
Colorado Springs, CO – November 8, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that for the first time this season, the Matador Football team has officially taken over the top post in the latest NJCAA Football Poll released this morning. It’s the highest the Matadors have reached in the poll since September of last year, and it’s the second time that the Matadors have earned the top spot in the poll since winning the national championship and finishing #1 at the end of the 1972 season. The announcement comes just three days after the Matadors defeated 15th-ranked Snow College, 14-7, in Ephraim, Utah Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated on the season. It’s the second time this season that a nationally recognized football poll has honored the Matadors with the top spot after JCGridiron.com’s ‘Dirty 30’ preseason poll placed the Mats on top as of last week.
The Matadors have gotten very comfortable being part of the elite of the NJCAA Football class over the past two seasons, since they’ve now spent a total of 399 days continuously ranked in the NJCAA Top 10. During that stretch, they have been out of the top five just once in the last calendar year. This year, they began their quest for #1 back in August with a #5 preseason national ranking, and have steadily climbed from there. They spent the last five weeks ranked 2nd behind the team they faced in last year’s C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl, Blinn College from Texas. The gap in points for the poll was steadily closing over the past two weeks as the Matadors dominated a pair of nationally ranked opponents, Glendale and Eastern Arizona, while Blinn struggled to beat Kilgore College (52-45) and Cisco College (39-37), two Texas rivals that both sported sub-.500 records going into the matchup. Finally, things came to a head this past weekend as the Matadors struggled in the freezing Utah temperatures but eventually prevailed, 14-7, over Snow, while Blinn faced unranked Tyler College in the Southwest JC Football Conference Semifinals, went to overtime and lost, 37-34. The first loss of the season dropped the Buccaneers to 7th in the current poll, moving the Matadors up to #1 and East Mississippi Community College, who won their Mississippi Association of Community & Junior Colleges Semifinal game over 14th-ranked Hinds Community College this past Saturday, to #2. The Matadors now own four of the possible 7 first-place votes, while EMCC, 3rd-ranked Butler Community College, and 4th-ranked Grand Rapids Community College each have one of the other 3 votes. AWC also has 137 total points to EMCC’s 132.
The defense of the top ranking for the 10-0 Matadors could be a historic one, since they’ll travel to the Phoenix area for the 3rd and final time this season to finish out their 2011 regular season campaign. They’ll take on Mesa Community College in WSFL play, and a Matador win would make them the first team in AWC Football history to reach the 11-win plateau for a single season. Kickoff is scheduled for 7PM at John D. Riggs Stadium in Mesa, and fans that don’t make the trip to Mesa (1833 South Southern Avenue) can catch all the action on the Matador Sports Network’s radio (SportsRadio 560 KBLU in Yuma) and internet audio legs (www.azwestern.edu/athletics & www.kbluam.com) beginning with the Matador Football Pregame Show at 6:30PM Saturday night.

Gregory earns 2nd straight WSFL Defensive Player of the Week Award

Freshman DE earns second accolade for monster game at 15th-ranked Snow Saturday
Yuma, Arizona – November 7, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that for the second straight week, AWC Football player Randy Gregory has been named as the Western States Football League Defensive Player of the Week for the week ending November 5th. The announcement comes just two days after Gregory helped lead the Matadors to a 14-7 victory over Snow College in a battle of nationally ranked powerhouses at Badger Stadium in Ephraim, Utah, Saturday afternoon.
A week ago against Eastern Arizona College, it was a fumble recovery for a touchdown and a sack (among his other stats) that jumped off the page to earn Gregory the POW Award. This past weekend, it wasn’t Gregory’s ability to score that helped him grab the honor. It was the steady domination at his position for 60 minutes against a top 15 team that made the native of Fishers, Indiana, a strong choice for the award. Gregory’s first official introduction to the Snow offensive backfield came during the Badgers’ initial offensive drive. After getting close to Snow quarterback Adam Eastman during a couple of earlier plays, Gregory stuffed the drive on a 3rd down and five yards to go when he and fellow defensive end Matt Miller both dumped Eastman for the Matadors’ first sack of the day. Late in the same quarter, the Badgers were trying to capitalize on getting great field position in AWC territory, and had driven to the Matador 20-yard line. Gregory ended not only the quarter but also the Snow possession by converging on Eastman at the same time with blitzing Matador linebacker D’Vante Henry. Henry sacked Eastman, stripping the ball from him in the process, and Gregory jumped on it for his 2nd fumble recovery in as many weeks. Midway through the 2nd quarter, Gregory forced a fumble himself, ripping the ball from Snow tailback Alamoti Vaenuku’s hands as Snow was driving inside the Matador 15-yard line, allowing fellow lineman Calvin Tonga to recover the fumble, turning the ball back over the Matador offense. Gregory capped off his monster first half by finding backup Snow QB Christian Stewart in the Badgers’ final offensive drive and sacking him for a six-yard loss that prevented the Badgers from getting into field goal range. Gregory continued to make a big difference in the 2nd half when he emphatically ended a Snow drive by slapping a 4th-down Stewart pass right back into Stewart’s face to turn the ball back over on downs to AWC. For the game, Gregory finished with 7 tackles-3 of them for loss, 1 ½ sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. For the season, Gregory is 4th on the team in sacks (6) and now 2nd in tackles for loss with 17.5, while placing 4th in solo tackles (16), and 5th in overall tackles (64), and assisted tackles (48), while forcing 3 fumbles and recovering a pair (one for a touchdown).
The 2nd-ranked Matadors now finish out their regular season schedule by putting their perfect 10-0 overall record to the test this Saturday, November 12th, as they head to the Phoenix area for the 3rd and final time this year to face Mesa Community College.
Lady Matadors ranked 19th in NJCAA Preseason DI Women's Basketball Poll

30-win season in 2010 prompts 2nd straight preseason national ranking for AWC
Yuma, Arizona – November 1, 2011 – Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the AWC Women’s Basketball team has been ranked 19th in the NJCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll. It’s the second straight year (and the third time in the last four seasons) that the Lady Matadors have earned a preseason national ranking, and they are one of four ACCAC women’s basketball squads to appear in the NJCAA Division I & Division II Polls. The announcement comes just two days before the Lady Matadors kick off their 2011-12 regular season schedule at the New Mexico Junior College Thunderbird Classic in Hobbs, New Mexico, Thursday.
A preseason national ranking usually signals respect for the level of success the team had the year before, the number of returning stars that a program has coming back from the previous year, as well as the level of talent of the incoming freshmen. The level of success from 2010-11 is obviously a driving force, since the Lady Matadors come off only the second 30-win season in their 12-year history, and their third straight trip to the Region I Finals last March. However, while reigning ACCAC Freshman of the Year Jolie Olingende (JOH-lee OH-lihn-GHENN-day) returns from last season’s squad, she’s the only returner, so the pollsters obviously respect the new crop of talent that Cunningham has brought in to complement Olingende. In fact, Olingende won’t be the only sophomore on the squad, since forward/center Chelsea Libonati transferred to AWC this summer after playing last season at Metro State College, who reached the NCAA Division II Elite Eight last spring; and shooting guard Brittany Belton, who played at Palm Beach Community College (Florida) a year ago. They’ll also get plenty of help from eight talented freshmen to round out the 11-player roster. The Matadors are one of only two teams on the Division I side of the ACCAC to be part of the NJCAA Preseason Poll, with defending Region I Champion Central Arizona College coming in at #6 in the poll. The Lady Matadors officially kick off their 2011-12 regular season Thursday evening in the first round of the New Mexico JC Thunderbird Classic against the host Lady Thunderbirds. Tipoff is scheduled for 5PM Arizona time, and it will be the first of three games the Lady Mats will play before the tournament comes to a close on Saturday afternoon.
After this weekend, the Lady Mats will come home to kick off the home side of their regular season schedule with a non-conference tilt against CETYS from Mexico next Wednesday, November 9th. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30PM at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus. Admission prices are as follows: $5 admission for adults, $3 for military personnel (with valid military ID), seniors and students ages 12-17, and free for AWC students, NAU-Yuma students, Matador Athletic Association members and kids under the age of 12.

Matadors come with a point of top-ranked Blinn in latest NJCAA Football Poll
Colorado Springs, CO – November 1, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that for the fifth consecutive week, the Matador Football team is ranked 2nd in the latest NJCAA Football Poll released earlier today. The Matadors-who stayed undefeated at 9-0 following a 48-9 win over Eastern Arizona this past Saturday in the Matadors’ home finale-again cut the points gap in half between them and the team they faced in last year’s C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl, top-ranked Blinn College from Texas. Blinn’s slim 2-point victory over unranked Cisco College (TX) last weekend cost the Buccaneers a point, so they now have 135 points and AWC 134 in overall votes; while Blinn has 4 first-place votes, AWC 2 and 3rd-ranked East Mississippi Community College 1. The Matadors begin their final two-game road trip of the regular season this Saturday as they face 15th-ranked WSFL foe Snow College in Ephraim, Utah.

Sophomore TB wins 5th POW Award this season; Freshman DE earns first career regional accolade
Yuma, Arizona – October 31, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that two members of the AWC Football team have earned Western States Football League Player of the Week Awards for the week ending October 29th. Sophomore running back Damien Williams was named WSFL Offensive Player of the Week, and freshman defensive end Randy Gregory takes home the WSFL Defensive Player of the Week Award. It’s the first career POW award for Gregory, while it’s the fourth Offensive POW Award of the season for Williams (& his eighth overall WSFL POW honor). The announcement comes just two days after the two helped lead the Matadors to a 48-9 victory over Eastern Arizona College in a battle of nationally ranked powerhouses at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma Saturday night.
It’s become a broken record of the best kind for Matador fans to expect that Damien Williams will always be up for consideration for this award after his strong performances each Saturday. Even though the road has gotten much tougher, and the holes to break through have gotten fewer over the last couple of weeks, the native of San Diego, California, continues to find ways to put on a show. Saturday night, Eastern Arizona’s defense immediately tried to set the tone for the game by stuffing Williams’ first run for a 14-yard loss. That may have only served to motivate him more. After watching the Gila Monsters limit the Matador offense throughout much of the 1st quarter, Williams’ 3rd carry of the night changed the momentum of the game in a big hurry as he took the handoff on a 1st-and-10 from the Matador 5, found a seam and bolted down the east sideline for a 95-yard TD scamper-his longest run of the season. It would be a foreshadowing of things to come, since the ‘Mira Mesa Express’ would have a hand in all of the Matadors’ next four scores. Williams gave the Mats the lead for good five minutes into the 2nd quarter when a defensive breakdown by the Gila Monsters allowed Williams to catch a screen pass from Matadors’ quarterback Cameron Coffman and motor untouched to the end zone for a 74-yard touchdown reception. The same two would hook up for a touchdown just two minutes later as Coffman found Williams with a pass deep in Eastern territory, and Williams did the rest for a 25-yard TD reception. Williams then provided the backbreaker of the game just before halftime as he took the direct snap in the ‘Wildmat’ formation (no QB in the backfield), rolled to his left and threw a 3-yard TD pass to Josh Ford (Williams’ 2nd career TD pass in his 2nd career pass) to give the Matadors a 27-7 halftime lead. Just to make sure there would be no EAC comeback, Williams capped off the Matadors’ first offensive drive of the 2nd half with a 31-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach. For the game, Williams accounted for 267 all-purpose yards with 161 yards rushing on 19 carries, 103 yards on 3 receptions, and 1-for-1 through the air for 3 yards. He had a total of 5 touchdowns in the game (2 rushing, 2 receiving, 1 passing). For the season, Williams has already eclipsed the 1500-yard rushing mark (1501, to be exact) on 179 carries. His rushing yards, his 20 rushing touchdowns, his 166.8 rushing yards-per-game average, and 140 points scored (23 TD & 1 two-point conversion) are all highs in the WSFL, and Williams is now the leading rusher in the nation.
Touchdowns off fumble recoveries have become commonplace for the Matadors this season, and Randy Gregory decided to increase that stat Saturday night-singlehandedly. In the waning moments of the 3rd quarter, Eastern Arizona took over possession at their own 28-yard line. The drive lasted one play as quarterback Tay Wright started to roll to his right, intending to pitch it to his tailback. Gregory read the play beautifully, getting to Wright quickly enough to disrupt his rhythm, and causing Wright to pitch the ball behind the runner for a fumble. Gregory made contact with Wright immediately, took him to the ground, but didn’t give up on the play, scrambling to his feet, grabbing the ball and sprinting 16 yards for the touchdown for his first career TD. That was the capper for Gregory’s night, since the native of Fishers, Indiana, began the night with a sack midway through the first quarter, made a total of 3.5 tackles for loss, and was in on a total of 13 tackles on the evening. For the season, Gregory is 3rd on the team in sacks (4.5) and tackles for loss with 14.5, while placing 5th in overall tackles (57), solo tackles (14) and assisted tackles (43), while forcing 2 fumbles.
The 2nd-ranked Matadors now finish out their regular season schedule on the road, and will put their perfect 9-0 overall record to the test this Saturday morning, November 5th, as they make their longest road trip of the season. The Matadors will be in Ephraim, Utah, to face 11th-ranked Snow College, who are trying to snap a two-game losing skid. Kickoff is scheduled for 11AM Arizona time, and fans that don’t make the trip to Utah can catch all the action on the Matador Sports Network’s radio (SportsRadio 560 KBLU in Yuma) and internet audio legs (www.azwestern.edu/athletics & www.kbluam.com) beginning with the Matador Football Pregame Show at 10:30AM Saturday morning.

Watkins earns 1st Team ACCAC, Knapp makes 2nd Team All-ACCAC; both on All-Region I Division I squad
Yuma, Arizona – October 31, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that two members of the AWC Volleyball team have been named to the 2011 All-Region and/or All-ACCAC postseason teams. Both of AWC’s middle blockers, freshman Amanda Watkins and sophomore Megan Knapp, earned All-Region I Division I honors. Watkins also earned 1st Team honors on the All-ACCAC squad while Knapp made 2nd Team All-ACCAC. The announcements were made at the conclusion of the postseason coaches’ meetings in Glendale.
In a season where injuries and illnesses have made the starting lineup change numerous times for the Lady Matadors, AWC Head Volleyball Coach Jason Smith has been able to point to the middle of the court for his consistency. The athleticism that Amanda Watkins showed early on in the season has now been complimented by her ability to find holes in the opposing defenses as she’s learned the college game. The native of Los Angeles, California, led the Lady Matadors with 14 kills in their season-opening win back in August, and that set the tone, since she led them in that category in eight other matches. She also showed the maturity of saving her best performances for the tough matches, since her career-high of 19 kills in one match was reached against two tough squads, Glendale (who was nationally ranked at the time of the match on September 23rd) and playoff-bound South Mountain on October 12th. Her hitting efficiency continued to rise as the season went on, and she finished 2nd in the conference at 37%. She also finished 9th in the ACCAC in kills per set at 2.74. Watkins shared the team high in total kills (189) with Paula Rosa, while placing 2nd on the team in blocks (53.5).
Meanwhile, Megan Knapp’s leadership in the middle helped get the Lady Matadors through the tough stretches of being shorthanded this season. The sophomore from Chicago, Illinois, was one of the few returning starters from a year ago, and showed a strong presence in the middle offensively and defensively that her freshmen teammates picked up on. Knapp had a season-high 14 kills against playoff-bound Scottsdale in late September, which was one of five different nights where she earned 10 kills or more. She also rose to the occasion when the Lady Matadors needed her, pitching in 10 kills 10 days ago in Coolidge when the Lady Matadors swept Central Arizona to clinch a playoff spot. Her defense was a big reason why the Lady Matadors reached the postseason, since her 65 ½ blocks (and .862 blocks per set) were easily tops on the squad. Knapp was also 2nd on the team in hitting efficiency (33.8%), 3rd in kills (171), 4th in kills per set (2.25), 5th in digs (43) and had nine aces.
Watkins and Knapp will now lead their team into Thatcher to make their second straight appearance in the Region I Division I Volleyball Finals. The 2nd-seeded Lady Matadors-who finished the regular season with a 12-8 overall record and a conference mark of 10-6 will face off against top seed (and ACCAC Regular Season Champion) Eastern Arizona College Wednesday night, November 2nd at Guitteau Gymnasium on the EAC campus. First serve is at 7PM, and fans should keep close watch on the AWC Athletics website (www.azwestern.edu/athletics) for updates on the match Wednesday night.

Impressive 39-point victory over #18 Glendale Saturday moves AWC closer to top spot
Colorado Springs, CO – October 25, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that for the fourth week in a row, the Matador Football team is ranked 2nd in the latest NJCAA Football Poll released earlier today. The Matadors-who stayed undefeated at 8-0 following a 56-17 win over Glendale this past Saturday in Phoenix-actually cut the points gap in half between them and the team they faced in last year’s C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl, top-ranked Blinn College from Texas. Blinn’s slim 7-point victory over unranked Kilgore College (TX) last weekend cost the Buccaneers a point that the Matadors picked up. Blinn now has 136 points and AWC 134 in overall votes; while Blinn has 4 first-place votes, AWC 2 and 3rd-ranked East Mississippi Community College 1. The Matadors come home for their regular season home finale this Saturday as they face 14th-ranked WSFL archrival Eastern Arizona College at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma.

Jumps ahead of NJCAA’s top-rated Blinn with impressive win at Glendale Saturday
Yuma, Arizona – October 25, 2011 -- Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the Matador Football team has moved up one spot in the latest ‘Dirty 30’ national football poll from JCGridiron.com. After a week at #3, the Matadors-who stayed undefeated at 8-0 following an impressive 56-17 win at 26th-ranked Glendale Community College Saturday-moved back up to 2nd in the poll. They’re now ahead of the team that they faced last December in the 2010 C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl, Texas’s Blinn College, who switches places with the Matadors after an unimpressive seven-point win over 2-win Kilgore College Saturday. The Matadors remained behind top-ranked (and still undefeated) City College of San Francisco from northern California. Arizona Western concludes the home side of its 2011 regular season schedule this Saturday, October 29th, when it hosts 22nd-ranked Eastern Arizona College in a big WSFL test at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Yuma. Kickoff is scheduled for 7PM.
