Maricopa County Considering Raising Fees At Regional Parks

Maricopa County is considering raising fees at its regional parks for the first time in four years. The Arizona Republic reports additional revenue would help maintain near self-sufficiency for the outdoor destinations that ring the Phoenix area. The county has scheduled a public meeting Tuesday to solicit comments on the plan. If the Parks and Recreation Commission approves the fee changes, county supervisors would be asked to adopt the new fees in January 2014 and they would take effect in April 2014. The proposal includes a range of increases, from a 25 cent bump in photocopying costs to a 35 dollar hike in the hourly rate to rent classrooms for after hours educational and community meetings. An analysis shows 87 percent of the park department's annual operating budget comes from user fees and concessions.
