Lady Matadors to face Redlands in District C Volleyball Championship Tuesday

Region I Champs to head to Oklahoma to face RCC for right to head to NJCAA Tournament

Yuma, Arizona – November 3, 2012 – Arizona Western College is proud to announce that the AWC Volleyball team-who won the 2012 Region I Division I Volleyball Championship last Wednesday-will head to El Reno, Oklahoma this Tuesday, November 6th, to face Redlands Community College in the NJCAA District C Championship.  The Lady Cougars earned the right to host the title match by virtue of their straight-set victory earlier today over Seminole State College (OK) in the Region II Division I Volleyball Finals in Seminole, Oklahoma.

The Lady Matadors have had to play the waiting game since they walked off the floor at ‘The House’ on the AWC campus this past Wednesday night as Region I Division I Champions for the first time since 2007.  They certainly hope that they can keep the momentum going that they gained while dethroning the four-time defending Region I Champions from Eastern Arizona College in impressive fashion, 25-19, 28-26, 25-23.  While they’ve continued to practice, they weren’t able to start fully preparing for their next opponent until now-although they knew that Redlands had the best chance to get there after finishing the regular season as the top seed going into the Region II Playoffs.  After 2nd-seeded Seminole State swept 3rd-seeded Northern Oklahoma College-Enid in the Region II Semifinals Friday night, the final Saturday showdown was set, pitting two teams that had faced each other three times already during the regular season.  Seminole State had won two of those matches over Redlands, although the two teams had split the two conference matches (the first matchup was non-conference).  In the Region II Finals, the Lady Cougars were able to outlast SSC in Game 1 Saturday afternoon, 26-24, and then dominated the 2nd set to win, 25-16.  SSC put up a gallant fight in the 3rd set, sending it to extras before RCC came up with a 27-25 victory to gain the sweep.  It’s RCC’s first Region II Championship since 1999-the same year as their last appearance in the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament.

The Lady Matadors will be seeking their first trip to the NJCAA Tournament since 2003 with a win in the NJCAA District C Championship Tuesday.  The Matadors will head for Oklahoma on Monday to prepare for the event, which will be held at the RCC Gymnasium in El Reno, Oklahoma at 6PM Arizona time Tuesday, November 6th.  Fans who can’t make the trip to cheer on the Lady Matadors in person can get constant updates on the match on the Matador Sports Network’s Twitter page (@thevoiceyuma).  The winner of Tuesday’s match will advance to the NJCAA Division I Volleyball Tournament in West Plains, Missouri, November 15th through the 17th.
