Grijalva Calls For AZ Schools Chief Investigation

Arizona congressman Raul Grijalva has called for a federal investigation into automated calls made by state schools chief John Huppenthal last week. In a letter Monday to Department of Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Grijalva calls for an investigation into whether Huppenthal violated student privacy laws for sending automated calls to 15-thousand Phoenix and Tucson homes in poor-performing school districts. Huppenthal explains Arizona's Empowerment scholarship program in the call. The program offers money to parents who send their children to private schools. Education advocates have legally challenged the constitutionality of the voucher-like program.

Huppenthal says he did not provide any contact information to the organization that is behind a large marketing effort for the program. He says the calls are effective in informing the public about the program.
