Arizona lawmakers want to make it harder for citizens to put issues on the ballot. A bill approved 29-to-one by the Senate Monday would require political committees to submit a statement of organization before collecting signatures to support their ballot item.
The Senate also approved a proposal that would ask voters to move up the deadline for groups to submit petition signatures.
Meanwhile, a House bill that would have Arizona join a compact with other states to push a federal constitutional amendment requiring a balanced budget failed in committee Monday.
The bill pushed by Republican conservatives failed yesterday after some Republicans joined Democrats in the Rules Committee to defeat it amid questions about locking future Legislatures into the compact.
