On Tuesday January 15, 2013 just after 6:00pm, a house was reported to be on fire in the 2900 block of West 20th Place. Arriving Yuma Fire Department personnel found heavy smoke and flames coming from 2956 West 20th Place. Firefighters protected surrounding homes and began to knock down the fire. A male resident in his early 70s and a female resident in her early 60s were accounted for and found to have escaped the home safely along with their two dogs.
The fire was brought under control and extinguished. The fire was believed to have started in a bedroom that received the heaviest damage. Much of the rest of the home sustained heat and smoke damage, and was not able to be reoccupied. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the residents.
Fire investigators were called to the scene and the cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
